“I’m so Disappointed!”

I’m going to add a 6th rule that I think should inform how we teach our children to read critically. We must teach them to rarely cancel or censor a writer or blogger simply because he or she takes a position that from our perspective is intolerable. Freedom expression is after all, the first amendment in our Bill of Rights. While not absolute, it should be seen as pretty close to that. It must be honored and protected.
Calvin Robinson, a priest and TV/radio presenter recently came under fire for a clip he posted on his Facebook page . The reaction from some of his readers was, “I’m so disappointed in you…”
His response below was insightful.
One of the most common attack lines on here is “I am disappointed in you, when people read something they disagree with.
Forgetting the condescending nature of the comment, it shows people assume one is after their approval. The only approval one should seek is God’s.
It also shows that people cannot cope when they disagree with someone they usually agree with. Meaning, people don’t want to agree with someone on everything. That is unnatural. The truth is, a lot of people don’t want diversity of thought and opinion anymore; they don’t actually want to hear other people’s opinions; they just want to hear their own opinions, parroted back at them.
Don’t let disappointment lead you or children to join the cancel culture.
Thanks for Reading, and Happy New Year!
