Considering Baseline Testing?

The word is out among public schools. According to one study, the average student could begin the new school year having lost a third of reading progress and up to as much as half a year of math progress. How will they know? They won’t unless they do some baseline testing. Establishing a baseline means finding out where the student is academically prior to beginning instruction.

One way to establish a baseline for your student is by giving him or her an achievement test. The information gleaned from the test is for you. In other words, the testing is functional. You’re doing it because it will be helpful for you to know to where to begin instruction. Once you know this, pick your books, set up your plan, and go to work. Then, next spring or summer, test again to gauge the progress made.

What are your testing options if you want to baseline test your student? They are:

  • Participate in a remote group test
  • Set up a private test delivered remotely or in person
  • Test your student yourself

Only the last option will not meet state standards if your intention is to comply with Oregon state law.

If you want to participate in a remote group test, you can choose from the following dates:

                September 4

                September 25

                October 16

                October 30

If you want to set up a private or semi-private test, you choose the date and time and we’ll do our best to match it. Send us an email at and let us know your preference.

If you want to administer the test yourself, you order the test in advance of the week you plan to test.
