Are You Open or Closed?
The words open and closed, are descriptive of the way students often see themselves and approach difficulties.
- Closed: “I’m not good at math.” “I’ll never understand this!” “I’ll never improve.”
- Open: “OK, I’ll try this.” “I’ll ask questions if I don’t understand.” “I’m determined to get it even if it takes many ‘do-overs’.”
What’s behind both kinds of thinking is an awareness that learning something new is going to take time, hard work, commitment, and a willingness to make mistakes. The difference between both kinds of thinking is attitude.
Attempt to practice an open attitude in front of your children when you face difficulties. Let them see your attitude toward problems as opportunities to:
- learn something new
- persevere and not quit early
- do something that’s uncomfortable
- be flexible
- not be reluctant to get help
Practice an open attitude.
